Fillers or dermal fillers
Fillers or dermal fillers are substances with gel like consistency that is injected under the skin to plumpup and give volume to a particular structure. Fillers have been and continue to be used for many different indications e.g., wrinkles, pitted scars, tear troughs, lipodystrophy of the face.
Two types of fillers are used:
Nonautologous or synthetic (manmade) or autologous:
Nonautologous fillers are either hyaluronic gels, collagen and some permament fillers that are becoming popular now.
Autologous fillers:
One’s own fat is harvested from another part of the body and the fat is purified and injected to correct a feature.
There is a lot of confusion in one’s mind when they talk of fillers and Botox. To keep it simple, Botox is a substance which when injected causes decreased formation of dynamic lines like crow’s feet or frown lines. Fillers on the other hand are volumizing in their use. They make the lips fuller, cheeks plumper and gives fullness and youthfulness to the face.
Research reveals that hyaluronic gels show a very safe history. The permanent fillers have more complications when compared with the nonpermanent fillers so they continue to be the most popular used material. When considering to get fillers for your face have a detailed consultation with your cosmetic surgeon and discuss your expectations with him/her. Being clear on what can be achieved and what can’t you will be more satisfied with your treatment.
There are three main factors that play important roles in how long the product last. They involve:
- The doctor: The technical ability of the doctor
- The patient: How active the facial lines are (smokers pout more) and how the patient breaks down or metabolises the gel product
- The product: Good products normally show good, longlasting results
Fillers are normally combined with a number of other treatments such as Botox, skin peels and many facial beauty treatments. All these treatments complement each other.
Treatment
Treatment with dermal fillers and the levels of pain experienced will depend on the area being injected, the product being used (some contain a local anaesthetic) and any topical numbing creams which are used during the procedure. The treatment should be relatively painless or mildly uncomfortable with the nose and lip areas being the most sensitive.
Common side effects from dermal filler treatments include bruising, swelling, redness, tenderness and slight bleeding at the injection sites, which will disappear either almost immediately or over a 24 48 hour period. Rarely some allergic reactions can occur with dermal filler products.
