Chin augmentation also referred to as Chin implant, chin enhancement, chin sculpting is performed to augment or reduce the size of the chin in order to achieve a more aesthetic balance among facial features. To augment the chin, either an implant is used or the tip of the chin bone is advanced in a procedure called sliding genioplasty. In many patients who are looking for a rhinoplasty due to prominent nose are actually candidates for chin augmenation which helps in setting the balance of the face right.
Who Should Get Chin Surgery?
Men and women who look to chin augmentation as a cosmetic solution suffer from microgenia (small-chin). For these individuals, the chin is out of proportion with the rest of the face, making other features appear prominent.
Generally, those whose microgenia is too severe to be alleviated with implants may benefit from the sliding genioplasty. The majority of patients seeking chin surgery wish to enhance the chin with an implant.
Surgery
During chin surgery, the chin is either made bigger by sliding genioplasty or by inserting implants, advancing the chin bone, or removing and reshaping the chin bone.
For chin implants, the incision is made either inside the mouth or below the chin. Next, a pocket is created as a pocket for the implant and the implant is inserted, placing it just in front of the chin portion of the jawbone. Stitches are used to close the incision.
Alternatively, the tip of the chin bone can be moved forward. In this case, the incision is made either inside the mouth or below the lower lip. The chin bone is cut with a sagittal saw, taking care to minimize trauma to the soft tissue. The bone piece is then fixated in its new position with titanium screws or wires, and sutures are placed to close the incision.
With chin reduction, the tip of the bone is detached and reshaped to create a more aesthetic contour, then repositioned. In some cases, the excess chin bone is filed down to a more aesthetic size and shape.
Both chin augmentation and reduction procedures are usually conducted in an outpatient setting with general anesthesia. However, a chin implant may also be placed under local anesthesia with sedation (?twilight?).
After Chin Surgery: What Should I Expect?
Dr. Dahan will provide aftercare instructions that most likely recommend a soft diet in the first days or weeks following chin surgery. You will need to practice good oral hygiene at this time to minimize the risk of infection which is rare. Ice compresses and head elevation reduces swelling, bruising and discomfort.
Most patients return to work or school in 5-7 days and should avoid contact sports for 4-6 weeks.
