Vitiligo surgery Treatment

Vitiligo also called as leucoderma or white patches in the skin/ safed daag (in Hindi) is a medical condition where focal or diffuse depigmented areas occur in the skin. It is medically treated by a dermatologist. However, after the white area has been stable for about a year, plastic Surgery can be done to treat the patches. Although many treatments are existing in the current day scenario, the most effective or gold standard still remains dermabrasion and very thin split skin grafting of the area.

The grafted skin takes about 10-14 days to settle and requires after-care which will be explained to the patient once they decide for the procedure. The grafted area may be hyperpigmented or hypopigmented for some time and the final result may take about one year to show. Thus, the surgery has to be planned well in advance. Small vitiligo patches may also be excised and closed primarily.
